◎ Character's Name: Undyne
◎ Character's Canon: Undertale
◎ Character's Age:Unknown
◎ Canon Point: Post Pacifist True-End
◎ Background/History: On the wiki!
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Nope!
◎ Personality: ANGRY SUSHI ROLL, TOO SHOUNEN, TOO ANIME FOR THIS WORLD.
Undyne is the hotblooded Heroine of Justice who is SHOUNEN AS FUCK. Whether she's making (up) monologues while standing dramatically on a mountaintop, trying to hunt down and murder a child for their soul, or burning her house down because the stove needed to be HOTTER DAMMIT, she does everything with passion. Really, really loud, reckless, unthinking, often violent passion. Holding back simply isn’t in Undyne’s repertoire; whatever she’s doing, no matter how mundane, she’ll throw herself into it gleefully at 110%. Who needs to think about their life choices when YOU CAN JUST ACT!!
The narrator-proclaimed ‘brave heroine who never gives up’, Undyne sees herself as a knight in shining armor and does everything she can to live up to the role. And in many aspects, she succeeds...well, more or less. She’s definitely brave; outside of her determination to never back down from a fight, no matter how injured she is, she also jumps in front of a kid and takes a mortal blow for them without hesitation in one route. She genuinely does want to protect all of monsterkind and fulfill their wishes, and is willing to go to whatever lengths to do so. She absolutely refuses to hurt anyone she considers innocent and will prioritize saving their lives over her own goals; for example, if Frisk chooses not to help when Monster Kid is dangling off a bridge, Undyne will jump down and rescue them herself instead of going ahead and fighting Frisk, even though it means she’s seriously injured for their upcoming battle. She’s honorable in battle; she throws Frisk a spear at the start of their fight so they can block her attacks, and will even walk them through how if it looks like they’re struggling (unless they toy with her too much whereupon she loses her temper anyway and stops holding back).
Unfortunately, it’s this dedication to justice that winds up being Undyne’s biggest flaw. She sees the world in black and white, and her need to be a hero on the just side means that she tends to try to twist reality to fit her own views, where anyone standing in her way is Wrong. This is especially apparent when she first confronts a pacifist Frisk; she needs their soul to free the monsters and fulfill everyone’s dreams, ergo they must be a villain and better off dead. While she can be seen as more in the right on the routes where Frisk has actually killed someone, her excuses for attacking and trying to murder a child on the pacifist route when they’ve never hurt a soul come off as flimsy and desperate. She calls them a coward for never hurting anyone, despite the fact that pacifism is a quality she actually admires in people. Despite the fact that she’s conflicted over killing them, as is made evident during the battle (she’ll slow down her attacks if Frisk tells her they just want to be friends) and later when they hang out, her pride and her need to be right makes her unable to reconsider her stance and back down, whether she’s about to die or whether Frisk tries to show her mercy. Even after Frisk selflessly saves her after she faints from overheating, she still suspects they’re up to something and refuses to befriend them until Papyrus challenges her to do so. This isn’t just her cynicism about humans at work - she simply can’t accept being wrong and therefore Unjust about Frisk unless they put in a great deal of effort to show her so (not to mention that she’s nursing a minor grudge over her own wounded pride). And even after they become friends, Undyne still shows no regret over attacking them, speaking of their battle fondly with zero remorse whatsoever.
Her pride and her determination to protect innocents and be their hero also means that she’ll go to rather extreme measures against her enemies. Undyne can grudgewank someone into eternity. Kill a single (non-plot mandated) monster and she’ll never agree to befriend you and vows to beat the living shit out of you, no matter how kind you are to her and everyone else afterwards. Kill enough of them and she’ll stage a coup, overthrow the queen, become Empress, militarize the entire Underground, and try her best to start a genocidal war, all so she can get revenge against one person specifically. Undyne’s temper normally burns hot but fast when it comes to her friends or more minor slights, but for actually serious things? Again, see the ‘never gives up’ part of her description.
Her pride is also a double-edged sword; while Undyne may have a hard time accepting that she might not be in the right, she’s actually quick to blame herself for her failure to protect people. If Frisk kills anyone other than Asgore after Undyne befriends them, she’s absolutely furious - not just at their betrayal, but at herself for ever falling for it and becoming friends with them in the first place. If Papyrus dies, she drops the shounen heroine act completely and simply quietly tells Frisk she’s going to kill them. And if Alyphys dies, Undyne blames herself so much for her death that she actually completely gives up on revenge as it won’t bring anyone back, instead spiralling into a deep depression. While her Heroine of Justice act may come off as self-righteous or overdramatic in less serious situations, the core of it - the desire to protect as many innocent people as she can - is a role that Undyne takes very seriously.
That being said, it’s certainly not all of who she is. As unforgiving as she can be her enemies, Undyne is actually incredibly kind and protective and loyal to her friends and to those she sees as innocent. For all of her anger, Undyne is usually driven far more by compassion than she is by hatred. She has a fondness for teaching others as she believes it can bring people closer, whether it’s piano lessons to a shy singer, (terrible) cooking lessons to her best friend, or becoming a gym teacher at the end of certain routes. For all of her violent tendencies, she actually highly values kindness and pacifism in others; she respects Asgore greatly for his choice to teach her rather than fight her when she attacked him, she does her best to protect Papyrus’s innocent kindness, and it’s only when Frisk truly proves to her that they have absolutely no desire to ever hurt anyone no matter the circumstances that she finally accepts and returns their friendship.
She’s also far more sympathetic and surprisingly perceptive when it comes to her friends. She’s able to quickly tell that despite Papyrus’s desire and even physical aptitude to be a Royal Guard, he doesn’t have the right personality for it - and to protect her friend’s innocence, she tries to give him cooking lessons instead to hopefully lead him down a different and more peaceful path. When she finds out how much Alphys has been lying to her, she doesn’t react with anger at all, but with reassurance that she liked her for her passion and not for how ‘cool’ she tried to make herself to be. And even though she’s clearly upset by the death of her mentor, she tells Frisk that she understands why they had to kill him and remains friends with them - a far cry from their first meeting when she refused to see their perspective at all. She’s still brash and loud and rude towards her friends, but it’s in a far more good-natured kind of way than she is towards her enemies.
◎ Powers/Abilities: Energy spears: Undyne can summon multiple energy spears. She usually fights by throwing them, summoning them in midair around her target, or using them as an actual spear, but she can also have them phase through the floor around someone's feet. They normally disappear after she's thrown them, but she's able to keep them in solid form if she wants to. They can even change direction mid-flight and attack her target from the opposite side.
Green magic: Undyne can turn someone’s soul GREEN, forcing them to be unable to move past a tiny circle. They can still move enough to block her attacks and attack her back….somehow...but they won’t be able to dodge or run unless she lifts the magic off of them.
Fighting prowess: As Captain of the Royal Guard, Undyne's physical fighting skill is said to be second only to the King's. She's strong enough to suplex TEN BOULDERS JUST BECAUSE SHE CAN. Just don't ask her to walk more than a couple of feet in hot weather while wearing full armor.
General...fishiness: This one’s mostly headcanon, but come on, she has gills and no nose. She can definitely breathe underwater.
DETERMINATION: Monsters are physically made mostly of magic, so when they die, they usually dissolve into dust. However, Undyne has enough determination that she can actually hold her body and consciousness together for a few minutes after she should have died, though she'll usually dissolve away anyway afterwards.
Undying: In extreme cases, like if she's facing someone who'll likely destroy the whole world if they get through her, she can actually use her DETERMINATION to reform her entire body and become vastly stronger and tougher to kill. This is still a temporary form, but it can last much longer than the few minutes her DETERMINATION would usually give her. That said, it can’t be activated simply because she wants to keep living or defeat someone - she has to have a very good reason why she needs to take her opponent down.
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:
One super shitty suit of armor
One hot fridge
One giant (replica) sword
One fish mug
Can I give her a piano…..
CEREALIA-Specific
◎ Element: Water. Because...she’s a fish…. And also because water can symbolize transition of life and mercurial change; not only can Undyne actually physically transform upon death, but depending on your actions, she can be as playful and cheerful as a burbling creek or as brutal and unforgiving as a raging tempest.
◎ Sense: Sound. Undyne’s a piano player who comes up with what is bar none the hardest puzzle in the game, where you have to memorize the beginning of a tune and then match it note for note, so she’s got a decent ear. Plus her home is dimly lit and she’s only got one eye, so her hearing is likely pretty stellar.
